Explore North Shore Beaches: Puaena Point

Posted by Sarah Klacik on

Our busy little town of Haleiwa boasts many attractions, but one that goes unnoticed most of the time is a little stretch of beach that captured me the very first time I saw it: Puaʻena Point.

According to Hawaiian tradition, Pele was once said to live in the area before moving to Hawaii Island, which is possibly how it got it’s name: Puaʻena Point, literally translated “hot issue”.

Because the waves gently roll into the large southern end of the bay, it’s a great place for beginners to learn to surf when it’s too big elsewhere.

Turtles are often sighted, and an occasional whale is in the distance during whale-watching season.

Puaena Point Details

Access:

The entrance to the beach is found behind Haleiwa Beach Park. follow the well-worn path toward the ocean, and it won’t take long to arrive at the beach.

Parking:

Parking is adequate near the entrance to the beach, however there is additional parking in the main Haleiwa Beach Park parking lot, if needed.

Lifeguard:

There is no lifeguard at this beach. Though this is a fairly protected area, be sure to watch your children as an occasional large wave can roll through.

Restrooms:

You will find restrooms at Haleiwa Beach Park, a 2 minute walk from the beach.

Additional notes:

Behind this entire area is private property. Hawaii laws state that beaches are public property, and owned by the state. But please be aware that private property can begin at the natural vegetation line, so stay on the beach and don’t venture into the grass.
